I don't usually write about political stuff, but the Protect Life Act going through the House this week allows hospitals to not only refuse abortions to women in life-threatening situations, but allows them to refuse transfer of these patients to a facility that will treat them. So basically, a hospital has the right to just allow a woman (and her baby) to die right in front of them and do nothing. How does this protect life?
I think if there's one time it's worth contacting your Congressman, it's over this bill.
....wow. I love how the irony is entirely lost on pro-lifers. This goes against the fundamental tenets of medicine.
ReplyDeleteBut women aren't PEOPLE, C. Gosh didn't you realize that?
ReplyDeleteLets just hope that no hospital will actually follow this.
ReplyDeletethis is straight up wrong.
ReplyDeleteIf there are hospitals that actually follow this, is there a list so that I know never to go there for my own care, whatever that may be? Ridiculous.
ReplyDeleteOne of the stories on it mentioned a nun who was saying that it is so great that hospitals don't have to act against their consciences now and they are protect. But I don't know what kind of good conscience would allow you to let a woman die in front of you.
ReplyDeleteThe thing about denying coverage for STD treatment and birth control is just as bad. This is all about certain right wing people basically wanting to punish women for having sex.
I am entirely pro-life, and I am equally anti-death. I don't believe in killing unborn babies OR women, and in desperate situations, you should really ensure as little loss as possible. Who would even think to write a bill like that? Certainly not a conservative politician with any common sense or actual understanding of the essence of pro-life-ism. People like that aren't truly right wing. They are just anti-left wing. The problem with that is that you end up denying something that left- and right-wingers actually agree on, and you end up out in some other wacky wing that no one agrees with. Sadly, this just makes the true right-wingers look bad.
ReplyDeleteum, EMTALA anyone?
ReplyDeleteWow, how appalling.
ReplyDeleteThere's is a deep irony here. Letting a pregnant woman die by refusing to perform a life saving abortion is just another form of abortion. A fetus cannot come to term if its mother is dead, by not saving the mother's life they are as complicit in the death of the fetus as if they had performed the abortion. They will also be essentially performing retroactive abortions for every potential baby that women could have had. They will be making widowers of their husbands and depriving children of their mothers. It is evil.
ReplyDeleteThis is making me think of the evils of female infanticide. People so clouded by the "value" of male children that they cannot see that without girl children you won't get any children in the future. And here, women, /mothers/, are so little valued that they are willing to let them die in the name of being "pro-life." Letting someone die is pro-death. Letting someone die for the sake of a fetus that cannot survive one way or the other is murder.
(Sorry to go on like that, but this really upsets me.)
I think the "reason" is that when abortion to save the woman is legal then you see abortions labeled as being for health reasons when they really aren't.
ReplyDeleteYou are all acting so dumb about this. Do you think any doctor or even any right wing politician for that matter would truly sit and watch a woman die and do nothing to save her? Ending the life of anborn child is definitely wrong, but we all agree that if it is an imminent threat to the life of the mother then you must save the mother first even if that means aborting the baby. This is a regrettable circumstance but any sane person would make that choice. You are only copying what you heard the idiot Nancy pelosi saying. This is just more rhetoric from the crazy left wingers. The purpose of this bill is to give a doctor a way out of doing unnecessary abortions because that is murder. Who can disagree that the fetus is alive in the mothers womb? What kind of life is it then? Not a dog or cat or monkey. It has to be a human life. So if there is a human that has life and then we end it, are we not committing murder. If a choice has to be made choose the mother, but the majority of abortions are not out of medical necessity.
ReplyDeleteWhy would we want to punish women for having sex? We like having sex with women.
ReplyDeleteNurse JD: Unfortunately, you're wrong about this. There are documented cases of doctors who refused to perform an abortion on a hemorrhaging woman b/c maybe there was a teeny tiny miniscule chance she'd survive without it. I have a friend who had a lot of medical issues and she started clearly miscarrying (bleeding heavily)... her PCP refused to give her medical clearance for a D+E b/c she didn't believe in abortion, and before my friend could locate another PCP, she had to have the procedure emergently in the ER and nearly died. So sadly, it happens.
