Weekly Whine: Charity

We donate a fair amount of money to charities, mostly picked and doled out by my husband. He's been doing this for years, and as such, he's gotten himself on a lot of lists. Once you donate, I guess your name gets passed on (sold?) to all the other related charities.

The other day, I walked in on him practically yelling at someone on the phone. Apparently, some charity he'd given to was calling him frequently and repeatedly to harass him for more money, and he'd finally lost his patience.

I mean, here he is, doing this nice thing, and he got punished for it.

Doesn't make you feel very charitable.

  1. Agreed! I think it is obnoxious.

I volunteer at a hospital. Yes, that means I do WORK there so they don't have to pay wages/taxes/insurance/etc to another human being (I do data entry for research and clinical documentation). I love what I do but I'll admit I am getting really annoyed at the monthly mail I receive begging for donations...because apparently giving them my efforts FOR FREE aren't enough.

    So...I hear ya, girl!

  2. I don't condone it, but do think that its a symptom of the bad economy. Charities are hurting due to fewer donations and look to prior donors to try and fill the pot back up.
What I think is worse is when you go in to the hospital as a patient for medical help and before you even get your first hospital bill, you are getting calls and mail solicitations from the hospital to make a donation to them. Ironically, I find that the hospitals where I got the worst treatment (large tertiary centers) are the ones who typically do this. The ones that give me good care (smaller hospitals) don't, although I would think that they would need the money more.

  3. I volunteer several days per year to camp for children with health issues and I get a TON of mail from them asking for money. My time isn't enough? Geez.

  4. My pet peeve was when I volunteered to do inventory stuff for the emergency room at a local hospital and they asked me to pay for parking! I was there volunteering and they wanted me to pay for it! Once I got ticketed for parking in the patient lot, I stopped volunteering.

  5. The more you give the more they want ! But on the bright side a giver never lacks..

    [ if you don't give]
