One of my attending's favorite person she trained with - a neuropathologist - got AIDS and from cutting a brain and eventually died from it. She was a wonderful advocate for us - making sure brains were fixed for a long time before we were allowed to touch them, and if any weird viral stuff was in the history, she would exempt us from working on them (that skull dust really flies around the autopsy suite when the cranial saw is a buzzin'). Yes, I had a lot of insane attendings, but some were good, too.
Most attendings are good. That one was good until he went insane. I have wracked my brain for years trying to figure out exactly where I went wrong in that OR.
Plastics Attending: What are all the terminal branches of the brachial plexus?
Student: (gets them all correct)
Plastics Attending: WOW!! Amazing. When I think of how much you know now, and what I knew when I was at your level...... I was so much smarter than you.

ReplyDeleteThe problem is you did exactly what you were TOLD to do instead of exactly what they WANTED you to do.
ReplyDeleteRookie mistake.
What, you couldn't read his mind? God.
ReplyDeleteThis made me laugh out loud! this series is hilarious. I'm sure someone will think something I do is completely insane, too :)
ReplyDeleteMommydoctor, I'll know I've finally "made it" when some underling of mine writes a blog post about what a nut job I am :)
ReplyDeleteOMG! You have terrified me! I'm a mommy and planning on going to medical school, but now I'm scared! I'm laughing and scared, but still scared!
