I still feel ridiculous being called doctor - whenever I call support staff for help or questions I say "This is Gizabeth." Most recognize me by now, but I still get an occasional "Who!!?? Oh! Dr. Shyder!"
I think this cartoon can apply to starting your job after residency, too!
So far I've been able to avoid introducing myself to patients since I'm in an elective side by side with an attending, but god help me, tomorrow I'll have to say to another human being. "Hi, I'm Dr. Ari"
Love the cartoons! I'm just coming towards the end of the equivalent of intern year in Scotland and I can safely say things are very similar here! Stuck in a stairwell and fantisized about quitting far too often!
Ha! (I think I start off most comments on here with ha! or LOL)
So far on my clinical rotations, I have already forgotten to sign a progress note and sign into morning report. I have also fantasized about quitting and thought I don't want to be a doctor. So far, I have been afraid of being stuck in a staircase, but it hasn't happened yet. I got a look of utter astonishment after I forgot how to gown up in the OR (this was after I had done it successfully quite a few times, but it had been a long day) and couldn't seem to cut a knot right to save my life (same procedure - I think the scrub nurse thinks I'm hopeless).
Hi, I just started working as an intern 15 days ago. Its SO true about this cartoon. btw, I'm uploading it on my blog http://liyana-chan.blogspot.com, if you don't mind. thanks for the awesome work!
O got stuck in an elevator, but not a staircase. Then yelled at by the attending for it.
ReplyDeleteI got trapped in an elevator and a staircase!

My BFF missed a delivery while trapped in an elevator for over an hour!
ReplyDeleteWe razzed her for days.

Is the staircase a metaphor for internship? ;-)

ReplyDeleteI got locked in an outdoor staircase on my very first night of internship (and yes, I got call on my first night).
ReplyDeleteI ended up slithering through a gap between stairs and spidermaning my way back into the building. No shit.
