I can't believe you would write a comic that is so insulting to the elderly. You should be ashamed of yourself. What's next, a comic about how stupid medical students for getting in the way while you administer the MMSE?
Techincally Jimmy Carter WAS a president before Obama, so they're not totally off...right?
I work with a large number of elderly patients, too, and one of their favorite things to do is scream at me day in and day about about how Obama is the devil. I just do my best to nod and smile.
My favorite is when they say "little bush." One lady said, "Bush. Not the one married to that really, really older woman. But the one that looks like a cartoon character." Nice.
P.S. This blog is so hilarious. Have been enjoying it for some time now.
The mini-mental assessment is a stupid series of questions in my opinion. As an elderly person if I were into hospital and moved from home to A&E and then a ward, I wouldn't know what ward I was in. I wouldn't care what hospital I was in either, or what town that was in. If I was in a ward for a few weeks as some elderly are, I'd get mixed up on the day, and date, even as I am now with full faculties.
MMSE isn't much better. When you've got a tremor, writing a sentence or drawing a shape is more of a pain than an assessment should be.
The new Montreal Assessment doesn't sound any simpler though.
ha! When asking about the President before Obama, I've gotten "Clinton" almost every time. One woman said, "that horny guy."
ReplyDeleteI stopped using the President question 5 years ago because I get sick of hearing why people like/don't like them.
ReplyDeleteYeah, you can get a sense of how the next election is going to go based on what the patients say when you ask them that question.

I did my neuro rotation at the VA, and I got "I don't like him" several times.
ReplyDelete"Who is the current Prime Minister?"
ReplyDelete"You mean the President?"
"No, the Prime Minister"
"I didn't even know we had one"
*Facepalm*
Well, October starts with the same letter . . . I'd give him a point! :)

Right, I always either get an enthusiastic response or a sneer. Now I ask about things like the mayor or to name a member of the Beatles.
ReplyDeleteI just got the Nixon answer last week!
