Fun with cross cover

Nurse: "Doctor, there's an order for a medication that needs to be renewed."

Me: "Okay." (signs renewal)

Ten minutes later:

Nurse: "Doctor, that order you just renewed... that medication had already been discontinued two days ago."

Me: "Oh, then why did you make me renew it?"

Nurse: "The pharmacy told me to. Can you write an order to d/c it now?"

  1. Makes you feel so warm and special when that happens.

  2. Reminds me of all the times doctors write "ok, 2 refills" on faxes on drug changes, drug interactions, etc.

  3. PGK: Hey, that wasn't my fault. On weekend cross cover, sometimes like 50 patients I've never met need meds renewed, so I have to rely on the pharmacy and nurses to alert me if one shouldn't be renewed.

  4. Oh Fizzy...I've been there. I hate trying to efficiently make decisions on patients with whom I'm not familiar.

  5. I was once asked to rewrite the indoor orders for a patient who I'd just discharged!!
