What to do if you're sick

  1. My sister once went in while sick and they just hooked her up to an IV and made her keep working. I wonder if that's because it was a military hospital.

  3. This was actually my morning, except that I got sent home fairly quickly. Having said that, I'm not a resident yet...

  5. this is your most accurate cartoon yet. Except the part about going home. I was like your protagonist for my first 30 h shift. My chief told me it "would be really hard to get coverage." My assistant program director saw me mid-shift and happily exclaimed that I was "strong like bull!" I think he intended it as a pep talk, but it sort of made me want to punch him.

  6. True for nurses as well ... except for the lil bit about going home, lol. Worked ER for several years... saw days where I was in worse shape than some of my patients. (That just makes you want to say "And you came to the ER for WHAT?!) ;-)

  7. It's true that most of the time you don't go home at all. This was based on the time I had tracheitis and literally could barely speak. The afternoon clinic was triple booked so they grudgingly relieved me after seeing how sick I was. I probably could have managed an inpatient call, but you can't do a clinic if you have no voice.

  8. Reminds me of nursing school, first day on a unit. It was stongly suggested that we were to be there unless we were dead or being worked on in the ED. I came in sick as a dog, and nearly passed out. Had my instructor and the staff nurses ask if I had seen anything that made me faint. "No, I haven't ate soild food in two days, that is the problem." Trust me, I was a Navy Corpsman, nothing I see, smell or hear could make me pass out. Excpet ear wax...that stuff is just nasty.:)

  9. Too true. I'm sick now. I think I may have adult pertussis. But since our surgery consultant can't cut it out, I don't think he cares.

  10. Fortunately I'm now in the phase where my immune system has contacted with every germ on earth, and I don't get sick very often. Last time I remember working sick, I went into the OR, and by the end of the surgery, I could barely stand on my feet, much less tighten the screws properly (ortho). The attending asked me if I'd been jerking off before going to work...
