Weekly Whine: Fashion, Part 2

You know what I hate? Fitted jeans.

As far as I can tell, these look good on nobody. Even in the above photo, the model's butt looks big. The other day, I ran across a gaggle of attractive college girls, all wearing these fitted jeans, and none of them looked good in it. Now imagine a non-college girl trying to wear these jeans, one who has curves and perhaps has had a couple of children.

I assume the women who wear these jeans think they look good and are not just wearing them to be ironic or something. Do they actually look good and I'm just a fashion idiot? Or is this like the eighties, when a whole generation was pretty much fashion-deluded?

I don't know what's wrong with boot cut jeans. I think those look good on everyone. Especially me.

  1. you are not alone! i think that everyone looks absolutely horrendous in them! including guys, which is all the rage in my neck of the woods. the really worst part? some of the kids can't decide whether they like baggy jeans or tight jeans better so they combine the two. they're tight on the bottom but hang down low in their crotch and butt area. they are all walking around looking like they have massive bowel movements in their pants! ahhhh, fashion......

  2. Fitted jeans used to look great on me, in my slim days. Now that I put on some weight, I hate them. Maybe it's just bitterness :/

  3. I like them with an oversized sweater and flats... But yes, boot cut jeans are universally flattering.

  4. totally agree. same thing with leggings, which no one should be allowed to wear in public unless it's to the gym. (one of the 4th years on a rotation with me wore leggings. to the hospital. to take care of patients. it was so unprofessional, and she did it several times).

  5. no offense, but we read your blog for comics.

    not for fashion commentary.

  6. Dr. Psychobabble: Yes, men in tight jeans is even worse.

Segments: I don't know if there was ever a time when I would have looked good in jeans like that.

Jenn: So why wouldn't everyone wear universally flattering jeans?

    C: I don't think I've even owned leggings since I was a child.

Rol lyle: No offense, but it's my blog and I can post whatever I'd like.

  7. I like my fitted jeans (not that I've been able to wear them for several months...), and I also like leggings. But I've always been pretty skinny and am kind of banana shaped. It helps a lot when they are stretchy. And holy cow fitted maternity jeans are totally heinous.

  8. I do believe they're called "skinny jeans" and nobody except hipsters and the ridiculously skinny wear them.

I also believe that while super skinny people can look okay in them, no one actually looks good in them.

  9. Skinny jeans don't hug butt cracks like they are clinging on for dear life...it just means they are skinny through the legs.

I also hate it when girls wear ONLY leggings out, and don't have those tunic-blouses to make it acceptable. I think it's super unprofessional, opens a woman up to unwanted attention, and is just gross.

  10. Maybe its a cultural or personal perspective thing, but having a big butt isn't unattractive where I come from. In fact, I know plenty of women, myself included who have strives to have a curvier butt/hip/thigh area. Who wants to look like a stick? I've got a nicely rounded, ample butt myself and I'm of the opinion that its fabulous. And I look great in my skinny jeans. Even pregnant, I get compliments. And that model in the pic above looks fine, but her butt is NOWHERE near big.

  11. OMDG: Very tall and skinny girls can get away with it and I think you're both. I'm short and skinny, and I can't.

Lemmons: I guess I don't know what they're called because I've never actually purchased a pair. And ALL the young girls wear them. I was recently watching X-Factor and saw that Melanie Amarro girl, who is nowhere near skinny, sporting a pair that made her look horrendous. She's a pretty, curvy girl and that was not flattering at all.

Milk: I don't think a big butt is intrinsically unattractive, but I feel like skinny jeans are not flattering to women with curves.

  12. It is times like this that make me so unbelievably happy to be a male with absolutely no sense of fashion.

  13. I gave up years ago trying to work out why women wear what they do.

Not a good use of time.

  14. Fizzy -- Yeah well, we'll see how it goes post-partum. I'm not holding my breath that they'll ever look good on me again!

  15. I love my skinny jeans, but I ONLY have them so I can fit jeans into my knee high boots and my knee high wellies! I like to think that the bulk of the boots counteracts the weird taper. Love wearing this combo with a long button up sweater, tunic, etc. But the butt should never be too tight - fitted, IMO, means in the leg.

  16. I think the model's butt looks fine. I think skinny jeans on a skinny person look fine.
I think boot cut jeans on a curvy or short person look like crap.

  17. Where I live baggy jeans are still the thing among the "fashionable youth", so anybody who wears a pair of those would look a bit silly. Personally I think they are adequate for some of the teen population and maybe for a mischevous female med student looking to score a higher grade in an oral examination with a male jury, otherwise they just feel out of place.

Then again, people usually don't have much criticism towards fashion (at least these days). You end up with fashion drones who use whatever they think it looks good on the others and not care whether it looks good on them as well or not.

Then again, I'm a man... what do I know about fashion? pssh... :P

C: Wait... 4th years using leggings? Isn't that the female equivalent of tracking suit pants? I'd ask her if she'd ever trust a physician wearing a track suit and lab coat

  18. During the winter I like to wear skinny jeans or leggings with a baggy hoodie and my uggs or rainboots. That way I don't have to deal with tucking my jeans into my boots or changing shoes. Super, super comfy. I'm in the classroom or library all day. I don't care about fashion. I want warmth and comfort!

  19. The only reason her bum looks bigger than it is (I still wouldn't call it 'big') is because those are horribly unflattering pockets. I think the jeans look great on her

  20. I think we're approaching The Eighties, 2nd Ed. I had some stuff to do downtown Chicago the other day and one of the stores had their window mannequins decked out with humungous bleached white, teased up wigs that looked like they desperately needed a trim. I'm pretty sure they were wearing the skinny jeans too. Aaah, the days of copious peroxide and perm.

I agree, that model (and most people, including me) would look better in boot cuts. Skinny jeans look good on almost no-one. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to return to my Rubic's cube.

  21. I'm totally pro skinny jean- I'm short and thin. I think they look really cute cuffed in a sort of retro way, plus, I don't have to hem them like bootcut pants, which suits my poorness and laziness. Aaand they seem to fit my sizable butt better, generally. I don't mind showing it off, though, so you may be onto something there.

  24. Once I started wearing sweats and scrub pants more and more often, I realized that I hated wearing jeans, period. Skinny jeans can look amazing with a great pair of heels, or under some boots. I definitely think you have to wear a tunic blouse over leggings. It's a little ridiculous to not do so. Oh, and stretch is a must in skinny jeans. I like to get really cheap ones from Forever 21 (I'm talking 14 bucks a pair) and wear them till they start to shrink/feel less stretchy, and I switch them out for a new pair. But then again, I'm of that generation that has been wearing skinny jeans since college..
