Tales from Med School: Oral exam

Dialogue following a mock oral exam administered by a surgery atttending in front of the rest of the med students:

Attending: "So how do you think you did?"

Student: "I think I did very well."

Attending: "You do?? You know, you forgot a lot of things. You forgot to ask for the vitals, the oxygen..."

Student: "Are you wearing two different shoes???"

(He totally was.)

  1. Gutsy move. Most of my attendings would have failed me for pointing that out.

I always hated it when they asked me how I thought I did. I felt like such a trap. I can't believe that attending did that in front of the rest of the team.

  3. LOL I wish I had the guts to do something like that!

  4. OMDG: Not in front of *just* the team, it was in front of all the students in the clerkship.

Segments: I have a lot of respect for the girl who did that.

  5. What was Attending's reaction? Laugh? Scowl? Ignore?

  6. That was a gutsy move. As a newish veterinarian, I am notoriously nervous about pretty much everything. It was worse when I first started doing surgery but the story of my boss (who is always calm and collected) wearing two different shoes on his first surgery day was brought out to successfully calm me down.
