These are the foods that I will literally spit out of my mouth if necessary:
raw tomato
coleslaw
seaweed
gefilte fish
tofu
vinegar
pasta salad
coffee
diet coke
I used to have "olives" on this list, but my daughter decided she likes olives, and I tried them again, and now I don't think they're so bad.
Mine:
ReplyDeletePeas
Kidney Beans
Smelt
Chili
better not let Dr Grumpy see that list......
ReplyDeleteKay
I used to feel that way about cucumbers and watermelon, but now I am able to make myself eat them if necessary. I still feel that way about Dr. Pepper.
ReplyDeleteI agree about watermelon and Dr. Pepper. Not crazy about cucumbers, but I can eat them.
Deleteagree completely about cucumbers and all melons in general. Dr. Pepper as well. Also, anything with curry/cumin (which is quite inconvenient as my husband's family is Indian...)
DeleteI'm the non-picky one in my family. The only thing I actually remember spitting out was what I think was a raw olive. It was terrible.
ReplyDeleteI feel for you. I was raised in the country where most vegetables sold were organic grown by local growers. My family also owned a piece of land turned into summer garden (common practice for many city dwellers). I grew up picking fresh tomatos and cucumbers for snack. I can really eat those things like deserts, but only back in my country. Here, I banned my husbund from buying store tomatos and cucumbers. And farmers market's ones are only slightly better. The quality of food in US in general is lower than in many other countries. Does not help if you need to stay healthy.
ReplyDeleteAnd OMDG - yes! watermelons in US remind me of cucumber taste or even...soap bar. And how honey sweet (with sugar crystals on the fresh cut) they are in my old country.
Coconuts sold here are horrible as well :-(. Try a Nigerian coconut once and you'll be hooked.
DeleteFor the longest time, I thought I hated avocados and guacamole, but it turned out I'd just never had a good avocado. Now I love them.
DeleteCooked onions. Urghhh. Someone once served me a 'delicious' onion soup. Worst experience ever, as I come from a culture where being picky and not liking someone's food is interpreted as not liking them. I just piled them on my spoon, and chased down with water - like taking pills.
ReplyDeletehow would you stay awake if you don't like coffee and diet coke?
ReplyDeleteDunno, getting sleep the night before? :)
DeleteFoods I will not eat no matter how they are prepared:
ReplyDeleteolives
fennel (the actual vegetable, not fennel seed)
any organ meat
pickled herring
Bananas. Or anything with "banana flavoring"
ReplyDeleteOkra. (yes even if fried)
cucumber
hard boiled eggs
canned tuna fish
jelly/jello (texture thing)
Those are the inedibles; bananas/eggs/tuna I can barely stand the smell without gagging. There are others I just don't like & some I don't eat for other reasons (beef/pork)
Your inedible list has some of my favorite foods! I love bananas, tuna, and eggs. And I only recently discovered okra and have been putting it in everything. Haven't fried it yet.
DeleteMy husband's no-eat list is almost humorously long:
ReplyDeleteany veggies (except potatoes)
any fish/seafood (except fish sticks)
eggs (except deviled eggs)
rice
bananas
peaches
pineapple
Watermelon/cantelope/honeydew/anything that looks like a melon
coconut (except Mounds)
Asian food
Coffee
It's a wonder that our 16 month old eats everything with any example like that!
I couldn't live without diet coke and coffee!
ReplyDeleteBut how did you get through medical school and residency without coffee? And how did you get through undergrad with all those all-nighters so you could get As and get into medical school? Medicine is the only reason I'm now hooked on coffee!
ReplyDeleteER MD
I think it's all in your head. People are spoiled so they get away with not eating stuff that's healthy. Meanwhile, there are people starving across the country and worldwide.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the input, Mom.
DeleteRaw tomatoes *shudder* I'm with you on that one! LOVE tomato sauce, tomato soup, tomato-laded curries and pretty much anything tomato except raw ones. I think it's the weird slimy juicy stuff?
ReplyDeleteI am the same way because as soon as the tomato is cooked even a little bit, I love it. I'll even eat tomatoes in sandwiches if it's heated. But raw.... horrible!
DeleteMayonaise (sp?) is one thing I will NOT eat, yucky yucky yucky!!!
ReplyDeleteAlso...
relish
pickles
viniger
bologna/hot dogs, etc.
