iPhone apps

Today at work, I was attempting to look up which medications cause elevated ammonia. I couldn't get a decent internet connection, so I attempted to use my Medscape app. Unfortunately, it decided it needed to download 29 updates before I could look anything up.

Does anyone know any decent medical apps for the iPhone? Something like the old 5 minute clinical consult.

  1. I've heard good things about Epocrates.

    1. Isn't epocrates for meds only?

    2. Nope, diseases and labs and calculators and stuff too - but you have to pay for a subscription for those things (they give it to us broke med students for free). If you don't pay, then I think it's just meds. I find that I use both medscape and epocrates, because sometimes one app will have something that the other doesn't. But the medscape updates are definitely annoying.

  2. UpToDate has a new mobile app now for iphone and android. It requires an individual subscription though. If your hospital pays for access, you can access the regular site through your phone browser.

  3. I use epocrates and medscape. First Consult is also amazing, but you need a subscription for that (free through some hospitals, so worth checking out). Ditto Ryan about uptodate.

  4. Medscape is by far the best app out there mostly because it is free. Just download all the updates for once and you're good to go. It needs a monthly update but that isn't much of a hassle. I use it all the time.

  5. Epocrates is wonderful, but requires a subscription. I also use first consult through the hospital and medscape. You can usually skip the download is you are in a hurry.

  6. Use Micromedex for drugs. I LOVE this app... use it almost every time I'm in clinic (too many drugs to remember otherwise)

  8. Merck used to have Mobile Merck Medicus which was a great, free app. They've put it on hold while they revise it (claiming it will be even better), but it's worth watching for when done. I also use Medscape and find that it wants to update when I want to use it, but I just decline (being a procrastinator...).
