When I was a third year med student, I worked in the ICU with Jake, one of our class's favorite gunners
Although it was early in the year, Jake already had quite a reputation for stealing procedures and just generally being a huge suck up. He also treated other students like they were beneath him and actually scutted them out. He arranged to have a specific attending on medicine that he knew really liked him, and then he'd position his lips right by the attending's ass at all times.
On one occasion, Jake had the nerve to yell at me because I didn't come get him to tell him that we were going to the radiology room for rounds. In fact, I did come get him and tell him that the attending had arrived. I only didn't come get him a second time to say that rounds were officially starting (like five minutes later). I wasn't his goddamn secretary.
A week into the rotation, we got a new attending, Dr. Barb. Dr. Barb did not like Jake. She vehemently did not like Jake. She yelled at him for getting an ABG when she specifically told him not to ("weren't you standing right there when I said that?") and became furious when he neglected to report a drop in his patient's O2 sats.
Jake's excuse (to me, not to her) was that he was at some pulmonary conference all afternoon, discussing that very same patient.
Me: "Hey, wouldn't it have been ironic if your patient died while you were discussing him at that conference?"
Jake: "Yes. It would have been ironic."
At the end of the rotation, Jake cornered me and said that he thought we should conspire not to give Dr. Barb our evaluation forms. He said if I gave in my eval, he had to give in his. This sounded like a really dumb idea to me.
But Jake was really persistent. He said, "Right now I have like high, high honors and her evaluation would knock me down to... I don't know what." He went as far as to say that if he had to hand in his eval, he "would be pissed." I finally said that I would think about it, just to get away from him.
We ended up handing in our evals. I later heard that because of Jake, Dr. Barb banned med students from presenting patients. I also heard that Jake passed by her while she was conducting rounds and she visibly shuddered and said, "I hate that kid."
Wow, that kid sounds awful.
ReplyDeleteThe word "gunner" gets thrown around my med school class often, but honestly I don't think anyone actually is one. There are a bunch of students who are definitely uber-overachievers (talking about how they're studying for Step 1 the weekend after we had our last MS1 final, etc), but they never actually try to bring other students down. One guy even emails out the whole class his lengthy study guides every week. Sure they can be annoying (and make the rest of us feel bad for *gasp* NOT studying for boards yet), but I think their intentions are good.
Well, as I've said, there's a difference between gunners and nerds:

Isn't it great when someone you dislike gets their comeuppance? I remember one time some jerk cut me off when I was driving, and like 30 seconds later he got pulled over. It was awesome. I still relish the memory.
ReplyDeleteHe didn't get his final comeuppance though. He actually made the best match in the history of our school and it looks like he got into a great fellowship too.
DeleteI always liked the attendings that could spot a gunner from 100 paces.
ReplyDeleteGood grief. I don't know how I would cope with people like Jake. I admire your ability to stay calm in a situation like that. I have a fiery temper, so I'm pretty sure if a peer of equal lowly rank yelled at me for not getting him for rounds, I would have said something vicious.
ReplyDeleteThis is totally related, but go Obamacare!! :)
ReplyDeleteYou see, gunners? This is why we can't have nice things! >:(
ReplyDeleteThe new-ish term now in the med student lexicon is 'sniper,' the more offensive version of gunner. Its someone who guns to destroy a specific target (say, everyone else on their rotation), or one who intentionally misdirects their colleagues so they can get ahead (like distributing study guides from the previous year but leaving out pages). We had an exchange student rotating in ped surg w/ 1 other student... the class sniper. The poor foreign student had no idea what was going on. "Why did he pre-round on my patients and his? It looks like he's intentionally making me look bad in front of the attending and my patient!" "Do all Americans push and shove to get to scrub in?" It was embarrassing to explain and difficult to convince her that not all American med students are like this.
Thanks for sharing an M3 story. please regale us with more tales from med school! :) :)
Some people can see through bullshit better than others.
ReplyDeleteThis is totally related, but go away Obamacare!! :)
ReplyDeleteI fixed it for you.
Wow...so you're against accessible health care for everyone? Good for you!!!
DeleteYeah Obamacare is horrible, don't those single parents working at three jobs trying to make ends meet for their kids have the decency to just 'SUCK IT UP!'.
DeleteThey have the audacity to cause a tax increase for middle-class Americans (who need to maintain their position as being one of the lowest taxed countries.
Screw health care, and while people are at it, Americans should also cut funding for Firemen and police. If people want security and protection they should just hire private contractors!
(btw that was all sarcastic if you didnt pick up on that)
If you don't have a child, you pay more taxes.
DeleteIf you don't have a mortgage, you pay more taxes.
Why is paying more taxes if you don't have health insurance such a radical idea?
