Someone pointed them out to me, and since then, I noticed they're on every car. Notably SUVs. It's out of control.
I don't know why they irritate me so much. I guess I just feel like there's something obnoxious about putting icons of all your family members on the window of your giant SUV. You've got a lot of kids. We get it.
One of the suburbs near me has started putting these darn things on the undercover police cars. Super sneaky!
ReplyDelete"congratulations! You know how to breed!". I hate these things too.
ReplyDeleteI like the smarmy ones in response: two stick figured adults next to a big sack marked with a $.
I was gonna do this, but they didn't have an icon of a guy sitting on a couch watching TV.
ReplyDeleteBased on what you've written, it seems like they annoy you because you feel that they represent someone bragging to the world about what they have. Perhaps you don't feel that it's brag-worthy, either; in both cases, it comes off as somewhat irritating.
ReplyDeleteI've never been annoyed by these things, but then I often figured that their purpose was something different. Maybe the people thought it was cute (similar to the people who drive with stuffed animals in their rear window), or maybe they did it for the amusement of their kids. I figure that they did it for themselves, and not for me or anyone else who sees it. Perhaps as a result, I don't find it offensive or annoying.
You mean my irritation is irritating?
DeleteFizzy: Hee. Ledgem: Shut up.
DeleteBite me. I love mine. I have two kids. The one of the husband on his motorcycle is worth the sticker. It cracks me up every time. *razz*
ReplyDeleteI think they annoy me because it's almost like evidence of peer pressure still happening in the adult world. (As you mentioned it seems like they are on EVERY family car out there.)
ReplyDeleteDoesn't seem prudent to advertise details about your family to everyone around you.
ReplyDeleteI think I read something on the NPR or the local news radio channel here that those stickers were indeed used by unsavory people to learn more details about your life.
DeleteHave to agree with the previous Anon. It seems to be a bad idea to advertise how many in your family and pets. If someone is casing your house, they know how many to count.
ReplyDeleteOne of my neighbors is an older lady who's very nice, really. On the back of her car she has a stick cat sitting, a stick cat lying down, a stick cat curled up, and a stick cat standing.
ReplyDeleteAnd I always thought she was calling the same cat every night.
I completely agree with the Anons. Fizz, I was behind a minivan yesterday and was able to ascertain that the family had three kids (no dog), their children were honor students at my local elementary school, and at least one of them played soccer. People with evil in their heart could do alot with that information.
ReplyDeletehas anyone ever watched Dexter? the episode where one of the serial killers Dexter takes out scoped out a car with these family stickers and knew there were children in it to kidnap? tv isn't real, but the show was enough to make me question the wisdom of them.
DeleteI'm the only person with plates from out of the continental US driving around my area, if someone wants to find me, they will. The stickers with the kids and the husband and I don't matter much at this point.
ReplyDeleteI used to see this same phenomenon in Colorado Springs, only with big/small Jesus fish instead of people.
ReplyDeleteFizzy, you might appreciate these:

OK, those are pretty funny :)
DeleteThis one was floating around on facebook: http://www.amazon.com/ChainSaw-Nobody-FIGURE-FAMILY-Sticker/dp/B007PLZGO2
ReplyDeleteI hate those decals. They're so douchey, especially here in silicon valley where the “coolest" one is done with the Apple icons. Way to be a brand slave...
ReplyDeleteWhen I first noticed them, I thought they were kind of cute...but now its original NOT to have them. Plus my husband has declared them lame and wouldn't let me even if I wanted them.
ReplyDeleteI want one of me beside an empty wallet with a moth flying out of it.
ReplyDeleteI love the ones posted by Anon above.
Albinoblackbear: I want one of those too! Or one of Mom with kidssomewhere north of her, not responding to calls ...
ReplyDeleteThis one (albeit fictional) is my favourite:

Before my kids were school age I used to see a ton of stickers "my kid is an honor roll student at.." and wondered how it is possible with what i heard was a poor education system here. Now my child informed me that all B and A and one C are allowed for "honor rolls". Or now I get it why "honor" is so common. Back in my country A meant 100% correct answers, and "honor roll" meant 100% A's.
ReplyDeleteWhat is annoying - it is hard not to read decals.
Wow, you let something as insignificant as other people's car decals upset/irritate you??
ReplyDeleteI bought my mom this version:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.ebay.com/itm/ASS-FAMILY-DECAL-GRAPHIC-CAR-TRUCK-SEMI-VAN-SUV-/400086533995
The ones that really rile me up include names. Inevitably, it's "Daddy," "Mommy," "Aiden" (with a soccer ball) and "Nevaeh" (in a tutu.
ReplyDeleteMy brain requires about 4 milliseconds to come up with a scenario in which a predator watches the car drop off little Aiden at school, then returns in the afternoon to pick up little Aiden with the story of "oh, I'm Jayden's dad... from soccer? Your mom asked me to pick you up today because she's running late...." Boom. So easy.
Oh, and why do Mom & Dad get to keep their anonymity? Really frosts my cookies.
wow i am glad to see these are in the states too! in cape town, south africa (where i live) they are all over the place. the thing that kills me is the different versions available of the 'dad' and the 'mom' so you can 'individualise' your family. also interesting is that there is a doctor dad sticker but no doctor mom sticker, which really drives me mad.
ReplyDeleteI've got one, it's a Crazy Cat Lady one - you get to pick the number of cats according to the realities of your household. It's awesome!
ReplyDeleteI justify min because 1. I don't have an SUV and 2. Ours are Star Wars characters!
