What's up with blond hair and men?
Men like blond hair. A lot. My mother once gave me the advice that if you are single and want to make it easier to meet men, dye your hair blond. I did once, and guess what? More guys hit on me.
I've known several women who got tons of male attention who are not pretty at all, but had very blond hair. They all would have failed the Rosanne Rosannadanna test. (i.e. if you put terrible hair on an attractive girl, would she still be pretty? They wouldn't have. They were actually downright unattractive.)
I remember when I was a med student, I was working with an intern who used to get constantly hit on by patients. I remember one old guy looking at her and saying, "Wow, you're beautiful." And the thing of it was, she wasn't pretty at all (I can be objective). But she had really yellow hair and they all loved it.
I guess instead of whining, I should feel comforted that men are so easy to attract. No need for plastic surgery, only a bottle of peroxide.
Blonde hair is kind of the opposite of having bad skin. You can have great features, beautiful hair, and a great body, but if you have bad acne you will never ever find a date.
ReplyDeleteI've also noticed that now that I have enormous lactating boobs I get a LOT more male attention than I did when I was a pre-pregnancy A-cup. It's actually quite incredible what a difference it makes.
It's true... boobs make a big difference too. But it's harder to change your cup size than your hair color.
DeleteAlthough I have to add that I don't think there are any women who can *never* find a date. You just have to lower your standards a little :)
DeleteYes, I agree. Anyone can find love. Even women (or men) with bad acne.
DeleteI have to disagree with you there MD Girl... When I was 18-24 I had great features, blond hair, and a pretty good body, and horrible acne. I still got hit on all the frickin time.
DeleteThough I should note that I also have a tendency towards tighter clothing and lower cut tops, so I'm sure that helps too...
Maybe blonde hair and big boobs cancel out bad skin. Perhaps we should do a study?
DeleteActually, now that you mention it, Laura, I've never noticed that pretty girls with bad skin were particularly unpopular...
DeleteMaybe I go against the standard conventions then but brunette and ginger are more attractive than blondes.
ReplyDeleteIf I were a guy, I'd totally date redheads.
DeleteActually, as a girl, I used to like redheads, but then I dated one who sucked and ruined it for me.
Fizzy, you were a lesbian?
DeleteRedheads can be dudes ;)
DeleteYeah, I had a friend who stopped bleaching her hair, and said it was horrible how men stopped hitting on her, so she would never go through that again and resumed bleaching it. She had an affair with my then husband and now lives with him. Grumble. This topic makes me a wee bit bitter.
ReplyDeleteI have a funny twist on this whole thing. I was once blonde but about a year ago I went back to my natural brown hair color. Oddly, since then I have been approached on two different occasions by gay men (both times at Whole Foods, for some reason) who tell me that they "just had to tell me" that they think I'm "gorgeous." Since my hair color is the only thing that's changed in the past year, I have to assume that's what's making the difference in terms of the type of guy who has been approaching me. Both times it happened, I was totally flattered, but admittedly it's also a little discouraging because I am still searching for my soul mate, and I'm pretty sure these guys are not going to work out for me.....
ReplyDeleteI think this is a generational thing to some extent. I'm 24, and it seems like all the guys I know are attracted to girls with very dark hair and board with blondes since they're all over the place. I have blonde hair, and several of my guy friends tried to talk me into dying my hair dark brown because they thought it would look better that way (they also found a few of my friends much more attractive when they went dark).
ReplyDeleteOn another note (well another subject really - but it has been bugging me lately), I always wonder why every historical romance novel heroine has wildly curly, auburn/red hair. Do romance writers see Bernadette Peters as the quintessential romance hottie?
ReplyDeleteI don't get it! I think dark-haired girls are way more attractive. Could it be because blonde hair is associated with youth/innocence?
ReplyDeleteI'm naturally blonde, and my boyfriend says he finds it attractive because it seems exotic to him (he grew up in India).
as a guy ill have to say i find red heads hot
ReplyDeleteredheads have bad skin
DeleteI don't think it's hair. I think it's what people think the hair says about the person - blonde is associated with promiscuous. And every guy I've dated seems to not have had much hair, so I never really knew what colour it was...
ReplyDeleteAnd if society pushes "black hair" as the sign of promiscuity, then that will become more attractive. Just like tight clothing and revealing cleavage.
IMHO.
I think men and women have a different concept of female beauty. It's like how many women would call, let's say, natalie portman or 90s-era winona ryder beautiful, but i have yet to meet a straight guy who would characterize them as "hot". Women seem to focus more on the nuances of facial features and men tend to appreciate contours (curves, breasts, legs, etc)... you know, if we're generalizing. What does this have to do with blonde vs brunette? probably not much.
ReplyDeleteI personally always thought Veronica was hotter than Betty.
I know TONS of straight guys who thought Star Wars era Natalie Portman was hot.
DeleteWatching Natalie Portman as a kid, I had the biggest crush on her. Then I realized I had a huge crush on Hayden Christensen and Ewan McGregor too. Sigh. I still say I have good taste in women though. Oh, did you know Natalie Portman has a BA in psychology?
DeleteEvery single guy I know finds Natalie Portman "hot"... even when she was bald in V for Vendetta.
DeleteIt's like height. If you've got it, you're at least somewhat attractive.
ReplyDeletePopular women does not equal prettiest women. Can anyone name a blond who is prettier than this brunette? (note:this movies star did not have plastic surgeries, and I think beats Angelina Jolie)

I actually got some blonde friends. My best friend was a blonde but now she dyed her hair and it's a caramel color. Before she dyed her hair, she had some guys ask her out, but she turned them all down because she said that she "chickened" out. After she got her hair dyed, the guys just stopped. I thought it was a little weird. The crazy thing is she wanted highlights and her mother wouldn't allow that, but she allowed her to get her WHOLE head of hair get dyed. My other blonde friend has had a lot of guys hit on her and she's had many boyfriends. The only thing is she is like a stereotypical blonde. She's partially dumb..er...off.
ReplyDeleteAs a guy I've never been attracted to blondes. I've always been attracted to brunettes. (Especially brunettes with deep blue eyes and a lighter complexion.)
ReplyDeleteNatalie Portman is from my generation and I agree she's quite beautiful. A bit older but Winona Ryder and Tina Fey are too. As far as the more classic actors I've been slain by Audrey Hepburn. I love the French brunettes like Virginie Ledoyen and the much older but still breathtaking Emmanuelle Beart. I have a soft spot for geek girls like Jade Raymond.
Of course, this is all just based on appearances. Maybe it's different for other guys but for me personality is key. A cool, chillaxed, down-to-earth girl with some witty, sparkling banter, as well as with dash of geek chic, but who perhaps isn't so objectively attractive is way hotter to me than any of these actresses. Hell, she'd be way hotter to me even if she were blonde! ;)
I suspect that's why a cool girl like Felicia Day (a redhead) is so attractive to so many guys. Speaking for myself I don't think Felicia Day is all that attractive objectively speaking, and certainly nowhere near in comparison to the other celebrities I listed above. But she's definitely got an awesome personality! Anyway, point being, I've met girls who maybe aren't so objectively attractive as other girls, but who nevertheless still shine beautifully and are most surely quite attractive based on personality alone. Most guys would be lucky to date these cool chicks.
After all, hot girls may bloom for a season, but when the seasons roll on, the winter mists set in, and the looks fade away I'd much rather be married to a cool girl with whom I can connect than a hot but "colorless" (no pun intended) blonde or brunette or redhead or whatever.
Thankfully my wife is all of the above and more. :)
