In residency, I once watched an attending performing urodynamics on a patient.
The attending did a rectal exam on the patient, and after it was over, he didn't change his gloves. So he was using the same glove, smeared with poo and lube to touch other things, including the computer monitor.
When he smeared poo and lube all over the computer screen, I nearly lost it.
And then at the end of the procedure, he patted me on the shoulder with that same hand (thankfully, he had removed the glove, but not washed up). I had to go sterilize myself after.
Regarding your post a few weeks ago about doctors working when they are sick -- if this doctor you just described has that little concern about spreading disease and contagion generally, then I'm pretty sure he's the type who needs to STAY HOME if he, himself, is a walking germ factory.
ReplyDeleteActually, he should probably stay home at all times given the poo and lube example. Gross.
Eeeew poopy screen. It's one thing if you can't actually see the bacteria you may be spreading, but gloves covered in shit is a red flag to wash your hands!
ReplyDeleteOhmygosh. Ew ew ew ew ew. GROSS. I can't get over this. It makes me want to jump in the shower and douse myself with antimicrobials.
ReplyDeletei hope you also sterilized the computer too...
ReplyDeleteI feel like I need to sterilize my eyes after reading this. gross
ReplyDeleteAnd we wonder why that hospitals are a main source for infections. Sheesh.
ReplyDeleteThank for the visual, Fizzy. That's really revolting.
ReplyDeleteThis guy puts the word "idiot" into iatrogenic. Just confirms my suspicion that hospitals are no place for sick people!
ReplyDeleteOh my grossness. I might lose my lunch. I throw everything in the wash that I might have touched with poopy hands after diaper changes (you know when you are trying to prevent infant from rolling off the changing table after he already squirmed and rolled so much you got shit on your hands). I change gloves and wash hands after even touching the ano-genital area during an exam. Its just a reflex. I guess some people don't have that reflex...
ReplyDeleteI worked w an OB/Gyn once who never washed his hands. Like, I tried to wash my hands in his sink, and no water came out.
ReplyDeleteThat pretty much explains how my mom got C-dif twice at the SNF she was sent to. It drove me nuts. Just watching the nursing staff come in and out and disregard good handwashing or gloving!
ReplyDeleteDISGUSTING and HE should be cursed with C-dif, E-coli, etc!!!!!
Kev
that's so unprofessional and untidy. I pity the innocent ones who would acquire the infection, if ever. That resident should better review the moments of hand washing. :/ what he did was very FOUL
ReplyDeleteBeing observant with hygiene in performing anything is important, especially in surgery. Bacteria are everywhere and it is very hard to avoid them. Aside from washing hands, that guy must know to replace his gloves after every use and must be watchful of the things he touches, especially if he is in the middle of surgery.
