The 3D movies fad really, really pisses me off. I hope it's a fad, at least.
The cost of movies is already almost prohibitive. Maybe not for me, but think about a family of five going to the movies. It costs something like $40 without even factoring in the overpriced popcorn. So what can we do? Tack on $3 a piece for 3D.
And if you want to avoid 3D, it's not so easy because half the shows are now 3D. And of course, the kids will whine for it.
I might feel better about it if I felt like the 3D added something. But the majority of the time, you can barely tell the movie is in 3D. I've read that the brain already 3-dimensionalizes movies, so what's the point of the 3D glasses then? And it seems like these days, practically every kids movie and any adult action movie is made in 3D.
I just feel like the people who make movies don't care about using 3D to make the movie better. They just tack it on to raise prices.
A while ago, I saw this movie at the zoo called Dora and Diego 4D. At first we were worried that the other two D's were for Dora and Diego, but it turned out there really were 4 dimensions of effects. Aside from the 3D glasses providing some pretty cool effects, our seats go shaken and we got spritzed with water. Plus there was a smell at some point. Now that was worth it.
As for movies in the theater, the only one I've ever seen that I felt utilized the 3D effects to make the movie better was Harold & Kumar. I've heard Avatar did too, but I saw it in 2D and I thought it was so godawful stupid, I can't imagine that another dimension would have made that big a difference. Unless that dimension included a plotline that wasn't totally cliched.

DeleteAvatar: Dances with Smurfs. Pretty much says it. It's the same old white male fantasy of going native and then out-nativing the natives to save the day. Lots of books/movies have basically the same Orientalist plot and try to sell it as enlightened or new.

DeleteI totally agree about 3-D. I wear glasses already, so to try to wear some stupid 3-D glasses on TOP of those is really annoying and uncomfortable. I get a headache.
ReplyDeleteMy husband insisted that we watch the final installment of Harry Potter in 3-D against my wishes. I was irritated because I've read the series, and I was kind of emotional about it being over. The effects were HORRIBLE and it ruined the experience. Halfway through, I took the stupid glasses off and watched it all blured out.
I feel the same way you did about Avatar, too. What a dumb movie. I thought it was visually stunning, but the story and acting were terrible.

Harold and Kumar 3D was funny I think because they were so tongue-in-cheek about the whole thing. But like the fast food thing, I'll make my same point. You vote with your dollars. If you don't like a product, don't spend your money on it. And if your child complains, use it as a point to educate your daughter about the power consumers have.
ReplyDeleteI try not to go to 3D movies. I avoid them if at all possible. But sometimes there's only one time that works for us, and that time happens to be a 3D show.

ReplyDeleteYeah, like mlw03, there are so many other choices than to end up at a 3D movie. And, "my kids whine for it" or spoiling your kids is not an excuse.
You can go to fandango.com and check the times and not leave the house if you don't see a time that works for you.

What makes 3D movies the best???
DeleteMy father always used to take me to movies at a young age, and I really appreciated the experience. I'm a bit of a movie buff now and I attribute it to that. I'm not going to deprive my children of the experience that I valued just because of a surcharge and some 3D glasses. I'd prefer to see a crappy 3D movie on a rainy or snowy day than be trapped in the house all day. But at the same time, it does irritate me.
The things I write about here are not things that I hate with my very soul. They are just things that kind of bug me that I wish could be different.
Avatar in 3D gave me a migraine, but not sure if it was from the effects or if it was my brain trying to poke itself in the eye with a fork.

DeleteI enjoyed Avatar 3D. Yeah sure, it's a replayed redone old theme, but I was very impressed with the imagery. I'm not a very good artist, though I try, and that level of imagination and skill deserves a lot of respect.
ReplyDeleteOn another note, in my province, admission is $12.50. That's $25 for two people. That's absolutely insane. If a family of four went, that's $50. Plus the food. So $100 to watch a movie??? A ski lift pass is $60; may as well take the family skiing for twice the money, and twenty times the benefit.
I know that 3D TV is bad for kids. What about 3D Movies? Quantity of time?

I understand no one wants to pay extra for the fun stuff like movies, but aren't you a doctor? Don't you make a more-than-comfortable living anyways? Justin sayin...
