Cool names

Whenever a patient has an interesting name, I always feel compelled to comment. My comments are met with varying levels of enthusiasm.

For example, I saw a young female patient who had the same name as one of the lead characters on a very popular TV show.

Me: [upon reading her name off the chart] "Oh, like in the TV show, right?"

Patient: "Yeah."

Me: "I'm sure people say that to you all the time."

Patient: "Yeah."

Me: "It probably gets pretty annoying, huh?"

Patient: "Yep."

  1. I think Fizzy is a cool name. Was it your parent's favorite brand of soda?

  2. As someone saddled with a very embarrassing family name, I can attest that the last thing you want is people commenting on it. Especially when there are a couple of obvious jokes to be made about the name, and everyone who makes the joke seems to think the joke is hilarious and he is the first to think of it. Those of us with horrible/unusual names are grateful when you don't comment.

  3. We had to take my mom to the Emergency Deparment a few days ago. There was a darling volunteer there who looked just like "Penny" on "The Big Bang", so of course, i had to comment. She said several people have told her that. i said she is probably alot smater though.

Her reply: "Well, i have applied to various Medical Schools".

    "Bazinga!"

Ummmm, okay, sort of a reverse story.....

  4. I had a flashback to the move "Office Space" in which the character Michael Bolton dealt with constant teasing...

  5. I knew a guy named King who had an enormous extended family across a couple states (hundreds of em). He said: "By far, the most popular first name in my family is Rodney"

  7. I always feel weird when people comment on my name or my sister's name. We both have traditional boy names (we're both girls) and when people say "Oh that's a great name" my first thought has always been (and sometimes said)"Thanks, I didn't pick it". It feels strange to take credit for something my parents decided and I got stuck with. For the record- I do like my name- just always thought that!!
