Seasons

My daughter asked me the other day why the day is so long in the summer.

It actually surprises me sometimes how many adults don't understand the real reason why we have seasons.

Without looking it up or at the other comments, do you know why we have seasons?

  2. Why, yes, yes I do. Thank you for asking.

  3. I think we have spring and summer so that we don't kill ourselves during the dark, cold days of winter. Fall is just a nice addition.

  4. Because God created the Earth, then created the sun, planets, and universe to revolve around it. And then he wanted there to be seasons, so there are. And you don't need any explanation more than that. If you think you have another answer, you're a traitor.

  7. tilt of the axis-

as we rotate around the sun, sometimes (winter) we are facing more AWAY from the sun and sometimes (summer) we are facing more toward the sun. the spring/fall is the transition between. When we are facing toward the sun, we get more direct sun rays and it gets warmer. The opposite in the winter

It has nothing to do with how close we are to the sun. In the northern hemisphere, we are actually closer to the sun in the winter, but it is colder at that time of year since we don't get very direct sunrays

  9. I know why, but the depressing part is that we are still getting sub-freezing temps and snow mixed with rain and in six weeks the days start getting shorter. Aaarrrgghh!

  10. Funny you mention this---I was trying to explain seasons to my son a few months ago---and my husband corrected me---its not about the elliptical orbit of the sun around the earth but about the tilt of the axis. Of course I knew that at some point but I completely forgot!

  11. Well Dr. Fizzy, which submission are you choosing to help you answer your daughters question.

  12. Of course I do. Have they stopped teaching in elementary school that the reason we have seasons is due to the tilt in the Earth's axis? That's also the reason why northern and southern hemispheres are backwards.

  13. Because Demeter is bummed out when her daughter, Persephone, is in the underworld with Hades, and makes everything die. Then when Persephone comes home in spring, she brings everything back to life! It's all Demeter's fault. Who is this Axis dude/dudette?
