Weekly Whine: Steamers

I really hate all the bags of vegetables in the supermarket that you are supposed to steam in the bag.

1) They're twice as much money as normal vegetables

2) You can't decide how much of the vegetable you want--you are essentially forced to use the whole bag. I prefer to use a little bit of several different vegetables rather than a whole giant bag of, say, asparagus.

I know, I could just not buy it. And I don't, believe me. But when 75% of the vegetables in the aisle are taken up by the steamfresh bags, then there isn't much room left over for the frozen veggies I actually want to buy. So I'm constantly unable to get the vegetables I really want.

  1. Blanch your own veggies and then freeze them. Done and done.

    3. I would rather you write your blog & I will read it, than either of us taking the time to prep & blanch fresh vegetables.

    5. I'm seconding lyssum here. The sad thing is, I can cook, and I do cook, and I can make a meal out of whatever was forgotten in the fridge in fifteen minutes or less.

But I don't. I live on canned corn and grape tomatoes. And canned tuna.

  2. Well, I love the steam in bag veggies. You don't have to eat all the vegetables at once, you know. They keep pretty well in a tupperware in the fridge, and you can reheat them prn throughout the week.

  3. With you on this one Fizzy! I also don't like steaming my veggies in plastic bags. No environmental contaminant qualms, I just don't like the taste!

    1. They taste gross!!

The only time they don't is when you actually fry/sauté/steam them yourself in a pan with real spices/herbs.

      Which defeats the purpose.

It's kind of like Uncle Ben's rice. I've always found the taste to be artificial and chemical.

  4. I love the steamfresh veggies. They make it so easy with my busy schedule to make sure I get a vegetable at every meal.

    1. You're right about the price though. I solve that problem by buying whatever vegetable is on sale.

  5. Another one who loves the steamers....I'm both time-crunched and cheap! I buy them and eat one bag as a whole meal - at $1.75/bag (here), it's my lunch a lot cheaper and faster than the cafeteria.

  6. I also love the steamers. They're not that much more at my grocery store. Buying them means it's more likely I'll actually make vegetables.
