Weekly Whine: Bitch

I find it really shocking and upsetting that the word "bitch" does not get censored on general TV.

My daughter really enjoys cooking shows. She's really into cooking and making taste tests and we're totally watching Masterchef Junior this year. But I'm always on the edge of my seat because people on Masterchef or other adult cooking shows will come out using the word bitch, which is a word she otherwise would never hear in our house. (We never ever swear.)

I mean, I just want to watch a COOKING COMPETITION. It's not like it's freaking, I don't know, South Park.

  1. I am surprised "bitch" has gone mainstream on TV. I recall my shock when I started hearing "suck" being used..."that sucks", "you suck"...it made me feel my age. Which sucks. But I try not to bitch about it. You've got a legitimate beef, (see what I did there?) language on the cooking shows should not be questionable.

  2. About 10 years ago, I was caring for a 17 year old guy who had a visitor. Every other word was f*ck. I finally said to them that they were burning my ears with all that swearing. They looked at me in surprise. Then one of them said "dude, sorry!" To which I replied that I'm not a dude. Apparently, I'm just old.

    1. I had a guy in my office with a shirt that had the f-word SUPER big on the front. I ignored it until about halfway through the visit when I said something like, "...and your shirt is certainly interesting, but many people will find it offensive" and he did have the grace to look embarrassed and say he probably shouldn't have worn it.

  3. I have a sailors mouth and not much bothers me when it comes to language but I think TV is a little too free with the use of "bitch." How is that necessary? I'm trying to figure out how I would use bitch while cooking and I've got nothing.

  4. I love the Gordon Ramsay cooking shows because the amount of bleeping out is hilarious to me... but I'm on the same page as you. I feel like a lot of shows will slip in the word "bitch" just because they can, not because it's necessary for the character or the plot line. I have a pretty foul mouth outside of work/family, but even I don't like to hear it on TV.

  5. Yeah, and it's just so unnecessary. Profanity is a crutch for inarticulate motherfuckers.

  6. Assuming you don't let your daughter watch Breaking Bad - where "bitch" is a crucial part of a certain character's vocabulary - I pretty much agree.

  7. I can live with bitch, but why, oh why are there so many ED commericals on the food network?????? I avoid watching it now because my girls are 11 and 12
