For the record, I have nothing against Michelle Au. I think she's awesome. I love her blog. (Although I don't read it since it's become a Mommy Blog, albeit a really really funny Mommy Blog.)
But I have heard dozens of times in the lifetime of this blog:
"Your cartoons are a rip-off of Michelle Au's, except not as good."
And you know what?
They're right. At least about the last part.
Michelle is a better artist than I am. She puts more effort into her cartoons. She's funnier. She's got more kids. She's probably a better doctor too.
But that doesn't mean I can't be entertaining also.
Admittedly, there is a similar flavor to Michelle's and my cartoons, which stems from the fact that it's clear that we're both big Matt Groening fans. The "12 Types of Whatever" is very Life in Hell and we both make lots of Simpsons references. But I swear, I've been drawing these long before I knew Michelle existed.
Fizzy, I love your blog and your humor. But i gotta tell you, you need to find a way to check that insecurity of yours. I'm a fan of both blogs, and it never would have occurred to me to compare your cartoons to hers. They are both good (yours are often better). If someone makes a comparison, so what? If there's anything i find distasteful in your blog over hers, it's that you're so insecure!! Please, get over it. You're doing great.
ReplyDeleteI feel similarly. Then again, it's her blog - if she wants to write about this, then more power to her.
DeleteFor what it's worth, I discovered Fizzy's comics through StudentDoctorNet and have never heard of Michelle Au.
Never occurred to me. I thought this was going to be a rant about her recently saying she was too poor to afford shoes. That stuff really annoys me!
ReplyDeleteI started reading your blog BECAUSE I was such a fan of Michelle Au and I looked up more medical cartoons.
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm a medical student who draws cartoons as well (though I'd never put them up online).
There's room out there in the blogging world for the both of you.
Michelle is a undoubtedly a superstar. She puts herself out there, good and bad, and takes a lot of heat from the haters out there. You will, too, because everyone judges one another -- this just happens to be a public forum for such behavior. So thicken up your skin if you're going to play this blogging/book selling game.
ReplyDeleteIt seem on a quick glance that you have way, way more cartoons than her. Yours are really funny. Keep up the good work!
ReplyDeleteI agree! I like Michelle's blog but it I never go there for the cartoons (I think she stopped posting new ones a long, long time ago?). I love how your cartoons feel really spontaneous, and even if you don't think they are funny, you still post them (and sometimes that makes them even funnier). Your blog seems to be like this as well -- short, fresh entries, sometimes with a thoughtful punchline. Michelle's punchline is more like a hundred sentences of a reflective babble (which I enjoy, btw, but it's just very different).
DeleteEither way, I wouldn't worry about comparisons. She really put her life and privacy out there and maybe that's why she has so many fans (it's more relatable when, you know, you can see her kids, her husband, her favorite pen). That's definitely not a choice for everyone though (I can't even imagine putting myself and my family out there this way).
I have never heard of her, before I take the time to check out her blog I need to know, is she a skinny mini like you? Does she have a trusty bloging side kick with big boobs like ortho chick?
ReplyDeleteLove The Simpsons and love your blog Fizzy! Keep up the good work!
ReplyDeleteMichelle Au is awesome! I think you're jealous because you're not as good as her as a (fill in the blank). I can tell because you put that it turned into a "mommy blog". The funny thing is although she posts a lot of pics of her kids, she writes about life in general and what it's like being a doctor and a mother at the same time.
ReplyDeleteAgain, you're just jealous of her. So what? It's ok. We are all at awe at how she does it all and so well!
I thought it would be a fan post. I am disappointed to see this bitter jealosy. Then again there were many times you wrote in jealous, non corteous way. Maybe you are insecure person, perhaps this is why you draw many negative comments. Michelle though being out there with her real name and all mostly gets positive supportive admiring comments. My impression is while people like your witty cartoons, they genuinly love Michelle.
ReplyDelete" Michelle though being out there with her real name and all mostly gets positive supportive admiring comments"
ReplyDeleteYou mean other than the time she was getting so many nasty comments that she considered taking her blog down and finally disabled comments for a while?
fizzy, like several posts above, its never crossed my mind to compare you and michelle. both great blogs. you're doing great!! :)
ReplyDeleteHi Fizzy, I have been reading your blog without commenting for a few years and have loved it. Comparisons be damned!
