Weekly Whine: Belts

It seems like more and more, my belts are all ending up breaking in half at my most used notch, like this:

So I went shopping for some belts. Except it seems like every belt is completely ostentatious and ridiculous. For example:

I certainly couldn't wear that to work. I wouldn't even want to wear it in public. Or for that matter, walk around with a giant MK on my belt:

Are there any belts out there for normal human beings???

    1. There's pretty clearly a Marshall's label on those belts :)

    2. That's really not much better, sorry.

    3. Anon, 2/24 at 2:01 pm: you have no idea what you are talking about. Marshalls carries many top brands, the only difference is they offer much better prices. Tell us, where do the snobs go to buy quality belts, then?

  3. I agree with Sophia, get a men's belt. They are hard wearing and made of sturdy material. They are basically unisex.

  4. Pay for the highest quality you can get, which I will agree is men's.

  5. Just wear scrubs, like a normal doctor who has given up on life...

  8. I actually found a decent womens' belt at Walmart one time, believe it or not. The buckle was heart-shaped, but at least it was burnished metal so it didn't call attention to itself.

But yeah, craft fairs/renaissance fairs -- just be prepared to pay a premium as a good leather belt is not cheap.

If you're a do-it-yourselfer, go to Tandy Leather Factory and get the parts.

  9. I got a nice sturdy one from REI. I think it's this one http://www.rei.com/product/799501/rei-rugged-leather-belt I like it and use it every day. It has stretched a smidge but I just punched a new hole in it.

  10. The company Fossil used to sell nice, normal belts. I haven't shopped there in ages but you could look them up online and see what they are offering these days.
Most belts today are deemed a disposable fashion item, like everything else. That's why they are cheaply made. Most aren't even leather any more.

  11. "Normal" women's clothes don't exist anymore. It takes me months to find a simple pair of shoes that aren't clogs that I can wear on a daily basis. Simple, classic, no-nonsense women's apparel are either so cheap that they aren't worth using as rags or prohibitively expensive requiring a re-mortgage on the house.

  12. I've gotten a couple nice boring ones from Target. Not so sturdy, but they're cheap, so I don't mind.
