Me: Dunno, I think the most famous person I ever met was the dude who put in George Foreman's floor. And I put a foley catheter in the former head of the [city] branch of the CIA.
Friend: I once met Gordie Howe.
OK everyone, who knows who Gordie Howe is from something other than the Simpsons episode?
Anyone?
He is an NHL hockey player from Saskatchewan Canada!
ReplyDeleteHa, guess the question must be cause you are in the US - I'm pretty sure almost everyone in Canada could tell you who he is. I would say it's a household name, and I'm not even a big hockey fan! So yes, I would say they have you beat with who has seen a more famous patient :P
ReplyDeleteI thought his name was Woodrow...
ReplyDeleteThere's even a song about him. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZtK-2khay3s
ReplyDeleteI'm in the US and don't follow hockey, but even I know who Gordie Howe is. He played for something like 30 years, is called Mr. Hockey and has records and awards out the wazoo. It's not like your coworker said he met Taylor Pyatt.
ReplyDeleteI only know who Gordie Howe is because, as a diehard fan of Beverly Hills, 90210, hockey enthusiast Brandon Walsh (Jason Priestly) declared Gordie Howe as one of his favorite players of all time...how sad is that? LOL
ReplyDeleteI do but I'm from Detroit (hockey town!)
ReplyDeleteMr. Hockey!
ReplyDeleteArguably the best hockey player that ever lived. Sadly has dementia and has been out the public for a while now.
ReplyDeletePretty much a legend among hockey fans and/or anyone from Detroit (I fit into both groups).
ReplyDeleteAlso from Detroit so I know who Mr. Hockey is...have even met him and his little dog!
ReplyDeleteOMB Mr. Hockey, I mean before the Great One there was Gordie. He is a cross between Gretzky and the Messiah. He could take care of himself in the days when there was no enforcers.
ReplyDeleteWhen was he on The Simpsons?
ReplyDeleteBart used his picture to respond to Mrs. Krabappel's personal ad in the newspaper.
Delete(As a Canadian, the question here would be: who doesn't know who Gordie Howe is?)
Wasn't he the original condom model for Trojan?
ReplyDeleteCount me in as another person (an American, no less) who knew who Gordie Howe is. I also know who Tim Horton was (hint: he played a game that uses sticks and pucks -- he's really not just a guy who's name is on a bunch of coffee and donut shops. Honest.).
ReplyDeleteNo clue who that person was until this post.
ReplyDeleteSuch a classic episode, featuring, among other things, Homer's swear jar, the Yo-yo craze, and - most crucially - "Come back Zinc, come back!"
ReplyDelete- Woodrow
Hockey player. Longest career in the NHL I think (i.e. most games played).
ReplyDeleteHockey player. Longest career in NHL.
ReplyDeletebonus points for who knows what a "Gordie Howe Hat Trick" is...
ReplyDeleteA "Gordie Howe Hat Trick" is a goal, an assist, and a fight all in the same game.
ReplyDeleteI also once met Gordie Howe. And I'm also Canadian.
