Every week, he does a load of towels in our washing machine. Not the laundry, mind you, just towels. So today I was putting clothes in the wash and I noticed the machine looked like this:
Obviously, he must have noticed that it looks so cruddy and chose not to clean it. Is this something I need to specifically ask him to do? Like, do I need to tell him each individual thing in my home that I want cleaned?
You need to clean it yourself. I do not outsource housekeeping, but my friend who does pays extra for every additional task: It is 20$ extra to clean the refrigerator. The person who cleans your apartment already charges you very modestly, in my opinion. I do not feel that you will be able to part with 20$ easily, so see my first sentence.

DeleteNext time washer is filling up, wet a wash cloth (no soap needed), swipe it around anywhere you see dirt and then toss it in the washer.
I'm not going to pay $20 for something that would take him five minutes to clean. The stove or refrigerator is a different story. I could clean it myself quickly, but it's just sort of irritating to pay someone to clean your house and then find things that are blatantly dirty. Like I had a woman I used to pay to clean, and she would leave one or two dirty pots in the sink because she "didn't do dishes". It would've taken her five minutes to clean them and it would've been nice to not have to come home to dirty dishes after paying to have my house cleaned.

DeleteI can understand paying extra for cleaning a refrigerator well. It takes a lot longer than wiping down the washing machine as one must remove items and ideally remove shelves and drawers to really get it clean.
DeleteMy cleaners clean specific things (there was a list). There is a deep clean option which costs more and I don't remember what else was on it. I ask them to change the bedding because I hate it. There are things they don't do (like the basement), but I could ask them and depending on what it was they'd either do it or tell me how much more it would cost. They don't do the dishes but that's ok because I'm particular about dishes.
DeleteI think this falls under the category of needing a specific request because it's not something that's been regularly maintained.
ReplyDeleteI keep a few old cloths on my dryer to wipe down these areas on my washer when they start to collect dirt. It takes less than a minute.
Of course,if he left a big mess in my previously clean washer, I'd talk to him about taking more care of my things.
I'd also make sure he knows to clean the dryer dust screen after using it.
Now if it were my oven, I'd have to pay him extra to clean it since I haven't cleaned it in years. Maybe it's gross but it just doesn't bother me like the washer collecting dirt.
Btw,I think you need a new cleaner because of what you said about him not doing as good a job as he used to. I want people working in my home or yard to take pride in doing it well rather than those who start to slack off.
Get a front loader.
ReplyDeleteIf he uses the machine, it should be part of his job? It sounds like he needs reminding! I pay $60 every two weeks for a 1200sq. ft. condo (w/ 2 full baths)! They're here about an hour! It'll never be as perfect as I'd do it but because I don't have to I'm okay w/ a little less than perfect!

DeleteWow... (I'm not in the US) I pay 28€ per week for 4 hours of cleaning service. The lady comes one afternoon a week, stays for 4 hours and cleans my (sort of large) 2 bedroom apartment, unloads/loads the dishwasher and irons a pile of clothes and bedsheets. Even in 4 hours she sometimes leaves a few things incomplete (usually some of the ironing) because there's no time do do everything properly and the cleaning takes priority. How can you have your place clean in 1 or 2 hours every 2 weeks? :\ and it's so expensive!

ReplyDeleteThe washing machine didn't get that way by itself. Is the cleaning person the only one who ever uses the washer. If not, wipe it down yourself. Or have him stay longer. Or, have him clean every week. Or specify what it is that you want done.
I would never expect my cleaning lady to clean the washer, or the dishwasher, or the fridge. On occasion I pay her extra and we clean out the (chest) freezer together.
What does cleaning the washing machine have to do with a god complex??
DeleteWhile it does look obvious, especially as he uses the washing machine, most cleaners do need to be told "out of the ordinary" things. When we had a cleaner (can't afford it now), they had a set list of things to do every week (hoovering, clean sinks, windows etc), and then we'd leave a note with 1-2 extra things we wanted them to do each week, such as dust the fans, or clean the washing machine.

DeleteI sometimes asked my cleaning person to do a particular task during her normal hours, knowing that it might mean other things wouldn't get done since I wasn't increasing the timeframe. I paid $20 an hour.
