  1. If you guys liked Matilda then The BFG by Roald Dahl is a must read. Danny the Champion of the world is good, and the Charlie and the chocolate factory/great glass elevator are awesome (the illustrations especially), although about boys instead of girls. Also all the Little House on the Prairie books.

    1. Because it has the exact same plot as every single chick lit novel there is, except it's much, much harder to read.

    2. Jane Austen wrote the "original" chicklit.

  3. The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series - Read as an adult, and I keep going back to them. Perhaps predictable at times, but the way they're written is exceptional.

Anything by Madeleine L'Engle - Known best by A Wrinkle in Time, but every book I've read by her has been phenomenal (and the adult books are written at the same level as the kids', so try them out, too).

  4. The Artemis Fowl books by Eoin Colfer are wonderful, but are best in audiobook format. The reader (Nathaniel Parker) is incredible. He really brings every character to life. I keep them on my phone to listen to in the car on the way to and from the hospital when the mood strikes.
